Its isnad is sahih, despite what appears on its surface to be a mursal narration. For its apparent form is that it comes from Salim bin Abdullah from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. But in reality it is from Abu Bakr bin Salim from his father from his grandfather, so the mention of Abdullah bin Umar was dropped from the isnad at this point.It seems to me that this is an old scribal slip, for if it had truly been mursal in this way, it would not have been recorded in the Musnad, or the scholars would have noted it explicitly.What confirms what we have observed is that the hadith has already appeared with this very isnad correctly at 5798, and it has also already appeared from Abu Usama, from Ubaydullah, from Abu Bakr bin Salim, from his father, from his grandfather, correctly at 4742. We indicated there that Shafii narrated it in Risala 1092 in our edition, from Yahya bin Salim, from Ubaydullah, from Abu Bakr bin Salim, from Salim, from Ibn Umar, correctly as well.We add here that Abu Naeem narrated it in Hilya 138, via Qutayba bin Saeed, from Fudayl bin Iyad, from Ubaydullah, from Abu Bakr bin Salim, from Salim, from Abdullah bin Umar, and he said, "It is well known as a hadith of Ubaydullah, and we have not recorded it as a hadith of Fudayl except through Qutayba."The phrase "from Abdullah bin Umar," which was dropped from this isnad through the oversight of some copyist, was written in the margin of manuscript K, though it is not clear whether this was a correction to the copy or an addition noted by its copyist. It was also written in the margin of manuscript M as a variant reading, beside which was written the following, "This variant reading replaces the phrase 'from his father.'" This too is an error in the manuscript from which it was copied, for Abu Bakr bin Salim bin Abdullah bin Umar narrated this hadith from his father, from Salim, from his grandfather Abdullah bin Umar, as we explained above, and I have found nothing indicating that Abu Bakr narrated directly from his grandfather Abdullah bin Umar.The meaning of this hadith has also come through two other routes. Khatib narrated in Tarikh Baghdad 7/418, via Qudama bin Musa, from Salim, from his father, that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever deliberately lies about me, let him take his seat in the Fire." Khatib also narrated it with this same wording at 238, via Saeed bin Salam Basri, from Abdullah bin Umar Umari, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar.A note. In Hilya 138, it appears as "Ubaydullah bin Amr," which is a clear printing error, the correct form being "Ubaydullah bin Umar," and this correction should be noted. Praise be to Allah.
