We were with Abu Bakr al-Siddiq while he was carrying out his duties when he became angry with a man from among the Muslims. His anger against him grew very intense. When I saw this, I said, "Caliph of the Messenger of Allah, shall I strike off his neck?"When I mentioned killing, he turned away entirely from that subject to other matters. After we had dispersed, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq
sent for me later and said, "Abu Barzah, what did you say?"I had forgotten what I had said, so I replied, "Remind me of it. I do not remember what I said."He said, "Do you not remember what you said?"I said, "No, by Allah."He said, "Do you not recall when you saw me angry with the man and you said, 'Shall I strike off his neck, Caliph of the Messenger of Allah?' Do you not remember that? Would you really have done it?"I said, "Yes, by Allah, and even now, if you command me, I will do it."He said, "Woe to you! By Allah, that authority belongs to no one after Muhammad ﷺ."
