Salim used to hear him narrate from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, at the time he placed Usama bin Zayd in command, that word reached him that people were criticizing Usama and challenging his appointment as commander. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood before the people and said, as Salim related to me, "You are criticizing Usama and challenging his appointment as commander. You did the same to his father before him, yet by Allah, he was truly worthy of command. He was the most beloved of all people to me, and this son of his after him is among the most beloved of people to me. So I urge you to treat him well, for he is among the best of you."Salim said, "I never heard Abdullah narrate this hadith without saying, 'with no exception made for Fatimah.'"
Its isnad is sahih, and it is a longer version of 4701, 5630, 5707. We have already pointed, in the commentary on the last of these, to the narration of Ibn Saad 2/2/41,42 and 4/1/45,46, transmitted through Wahib and Abdul-Aziz bin Mukhtar, both of them from Musa bin Uqba. So here is the route through Wahib, narrated by Ahmad and Ibn Saad from Affan bin Muslim from Wahib.
