The Prophet ﷺ saw Umar wearing a white garment and asked, "Is your garment new, or freshly washed?"The narrator said, I do not know what reply he gave him.Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Wear new clothes, live a praiseworthy life, and die a martyr." I think he also said, "And may Allah grant you delight of the eye in this world and the next."
حدثنا عبد الرزاق حدثنا معمر عن الزهري عن سالم
رأى النبي ﷺ على عمر ثوبا أبيض فقال أجديد ثوبك أم غسيل فقال فلا أدري ما رد عليه فقال النبي ﷺ البس جديدا وعش حميدا ومت شهيدا أظنه قال ويرزقك الله قرة عين في الدنيا والآخرة
Its isnad is sahih. It is also found in Majma al-Zawaid 9:73–74, where it says, Ibn Majah narrated it in brief, mentioning only "the comfort of the eye." Then it says, Ahmad and Tabarani narrated it, and they added, after the words "and Allah grants you the comfort of the eye in this world and the next," he said, "And you too, O Messenger of Allah." And the men of their two chains are the men of sahih.Ibn Hajar mentioned it in Fath al-Bari 10:256 in brief, and said, Nasai and Ibn Majah narrated it, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, while Nasai found fault with it.Ibn Saad narrated something similar in Tabaqat 1/3/237–238, from Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Ismail bin Abu Khalid, from Abu Ashhab, that the Prophet saw Umar wearing a shirt, and so on. This isnad is mursal.
