During the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the call to prayer was given twice. Hajjaj explained, meaning each phrase was repeated twice, while the iqamah was given once, except that the muezzin would say, "The prayer is about to begin, the prayer is about to begin." Whenever we heard the iqamah, we would perform our ablution and then head out to the prayer.Shuba said, "I do not remember anything beyond this."
Its isnad is sahih. Abu Jafar the muezzin is Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Muslim bin Mihran bin Muthanna. This is how Shuba referred to him by his kunya in his narration, Abu Jafar, though it is said that his actual kunya was Abu Ibrahim. He is trustworthy. Ibn Main said, "There is no harm in him." Daraqutni said, "He is from Basra, and he narrates from his grandfather. There is no harm in him." Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat, and said, "He used to mix things up." This remark from Ibn Hibban is a passing one, for this Muhammad does not have many hadiths from which it would become clear how he used to mix things up. Bukhari gave him a biographical entry in al-Kabir (1/1/23, 24) without mentioning any criticism of him, and he cited hadiths that he narrated. The last of these was a hadith with two chains, one of them through Tayalisi, "Muhammad bin Muslim Kufi told us, he said, 'My grandfather told us, from Ibn Umar, who said, "When the Prophet ﷺ woke up, he would take up the tooth-stick."'" Then he said, "Musa told us, he said, 'Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Muslim bin Mihran told us, from a man,' meaning his grandfather, 'from Ibn Umar, from the Prophet ﷺ, similarly.'" Abu Abdullah [that is, Bukhari] said, "The people of hadith pressed him repeatedly about this, so he swore he would not name his grandfather."Muslim Abu Muthanna is Muslim bin Muthanna, the grandfather of Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Muslim. He is trustworthy. Abu Zura affirmed his reliability, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat. Bukhari gave him a biographical entry in al-Kabir (4/1/256, 257). This hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud (1/199-200) through Muhammad bin Jafar from Shuba with this same isnad, and he then narrated it similarly through Abu Amir Aqadi from Shuba. Nasai narrated it (1/108) through Hajjaj from Shuba, which is isnad 5570, the one that follows this. Dulabi narrated it in Kuna (2/106) through Muhammad bin Jafar and Hajjaj, both from Shuba.Hakim narrated it in Mustadrak (1/197, 198) through Abdullah bin Khayran, and through Abdan, who is Abdullah bin Uthman bin Jabala, from his father, and through Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal from his father, this being the same hadith found here in the Musnad, from Muhammad bin Jafar, all three of them from Shuba, from Abu Jafar Madaini, from Muslim Abu Muthanna Qari, from Ibn Umar. He said, "Its isnad is sahih."This is because he claims this Abu Jafar is Umayr bin Yazid bin Habib Khatmi, who narrated from Saeed bin Musayab and Umara bin Khuzayma bin Thabit, and from whom Sufyan Thawri, Shuba, Hammad bin Salama, and other imams among the Muslims narrated. As for Abu Muthanna Qari, he was one of the teachers of Nafi bin Abu Naeem, his name being Muslim bin Muthanna, and Ismail bin Abu Khalid, Sulayman Taymi, and others among the Followers narrated from him. Dhahabi agreed with him and did not challenge him, but both of them made a strange error in claiming that Abu Jafar is Madaini and that he is Umayr bin Yazid Khatmi! The truth is that Umayr bin Yazid Khatmi was from Madinah, and that his kunya was indeed Abu Jafar, but he is not the Abu Jafar who narrates this hadith.I do not know who added the word "Madaini" in Hakim's narrations, for one of them is the narration found here in the Musnad, and this word does not appear in it. In fact the Musnad contains something that contradicts it right after this isnad, at 5570, in Hajjaj's narration from Shuba, that he heard Abu Jafar, the muezzin of Uryan, in the masjid of Bani Hilal. This is certainly a different person from that one. What supports what we have said is that Bukhari narrated this hadith in al-Kabir, in the biographical entry of Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Muslim bin Mihran, by way of allusion to it, as is his custom, saying, "Abu Bishr told us, 'Salm bin Qutayba said, "Muhammad bin Muthanna told us, he said, 'My grandfather told us, from Ibn Umar,'"'" regarding the single phrasing of the call to begin prayer. Then he narrated it again by allusion, in the biographical entry of Muslim, saying, "Muslim Abu Muthanna, the muezzin of the congregational masjid, the masjid of Kufa, heard Ibn Umar say, 'The adhan in the time of the Prophet ﷺ was doubled, and the call to begin prayer was single.'" This was said by Yahya bin Saeed, Adam, and Khalid bin Harith, from Shuba, "He heard Abu Jafar from Muslim." And Ghundar said, from Shuba, "I did not hear from Abu Jafar anything other than this hadith." So the confusion entered upon Hakim, and it was not established, yet Dhahabi followed him without investigation!Ahmad's statement in this isnad, "and Hajjaj said," and so on, is a reference to the isnad that follows this one. Shuba's statement, "I do not recall [from him] anything other than this," means that he did not hear from Abu Jafar anything other than this hadith. The word "from him" is an addition found in a second manuscript, in the margin of K and M. We have already quoted, in what we transmitted from Bukhari, a similar statement from Shuba, narrated from him by Muhammad bin Jafar. Abu Dawud likewise quoted it, following the narration of Muhammad bin Jafar from Shuba, saying, "Shuba said, 'I did not hear from Abu Jafar anything other than this hadith.'" Dulabi narrated it through both routes, the route of Muhammad bin Jafar and the route of Hajjaj, from Shuba, saying, "Shuba said, 'I did not hear from Abu Jafar anything other than this hadith.'" Hajjaj said, "Shuba said, 'I do not recall from him anything other than this one hadith alone.'"This is a precise verification, and praise be to Allah for granting success.
