I went with Ibn Umar to visit Abdullah bin Muti. Abdullah said, "Welcome, Abu Abdul-Rahman. Place a cushion for him."Ibn Umar replied, "I have only come to you to relate a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever withdraws his hand from obedience to Allah will meet Him on the Day of Resurrection with no argument to offer, and whoever dies separated from the community dies the death of pre-Islamic ignorance.'"
Its isnad is sahih. It is the extended version of no. 5386, where we noted this and also noted that Muslim narrated it through this same route.Abdullah bin Mutee bin Aswad bin Haritha Qurashi was born during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. His father brought him to him, and he placed a chewed date in his mouth, named him Abdullah, and prayed for blessing upon him. He was among the men of Quraysh known for courage, valor, and dignity. He was the commander of the people of Madinah, both from Quraysh and others, in the Battle of Harra in the year 63. When the people of Madinah were defeated, he fled and escaped. He then settled in Makkah and supported Ibn Zubayr in his cause, until he was killed alongside him in Makkah in the year 73. He used to fight the people of Syria while reciting in verse, "I am the one who made a vow on the day of Harra, for freedom does not settle except once, and this time comes after the previous flight." See Nasab Quraysh by Musab (p. 284).Hafiz, in his biographical entry on him in Al-Isabah 5:6625, referred to this hadith of his with Ibn Umar and attributed it to Sahih Bukhari, but I fear this may be an error on his part, for Bukhari did not narrate from Hisham bin Saad, as is known from the symbol marking his biography in Tahdheeb, and from his being mentioned among Muslim's individual narrators in the book Al-Jamu bayna Rijal al-Sahihayn, no. 2140.Ibn Saad narrated something similar to this hadith in Al-Tabaqat 5:107, in the biography of Abdullah bin Mutee, through another route, from Muhammad bin Saad Waqidi, from Abdullah bin Nafi bin Thabit bin Abdullah bin Zubayr, who said, Ataf bin Khalid narrated to me, from Umaya bin Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Mutee, that Abdullah bin Mutee intended to flee from Madinah during the nights of the turmoil of Yazid bin Muawiya. Abdullah bin Umar heard of this, so he went out to him until he reached him and said, "Where are you headed, cousin?" He replied, "I will never give them my allegiance." He said, "Cousin, do not do that, for I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever dies without having given allegiance dies the death of the pre-Islamic ignorance.'"This is an isnad that would be acceptable, were it not for its being disconnected, for it is unlikely that Umaya bin Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Mutee could have witnessed this incident. What supports what I am saying, indeed confirms it, is that Bukhari, in his biographical entry in Al-Kabir 1/2/10 on this Umaya, said, "From his father, narrated from him by Ataf bin Khalid." So perhaps the words "from his father" were dropped from Ibn Saad's isnad.
