Ibn Zubayr used to give us dates as our ration. People at that time were suffering from hardship, so we would eat them eagerly. Ibn Umar would pass by us while we were eating and say, "Do not pair them together, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade pairing dates together unless a man asks permission from his brother."Shuba said, "I do not think the part about asking permission is anything other than a remark from Ibn Umar's own words."

كان ابن الزبير يرزقنا التمر قال وقد كان أصاب الناس يومئذ جهد فكنا نأكل فيمر علينا ابن عمر ونحن نأكل فيقول لا تقارنوا فإن رسول الله ﷺ نهى عن الإقران إلا أن يستأذن الرجل أخاه قال شعبة لا أرى في الاستئذان إلا أن الكلمة من كلام ابن عمر
