We were in Madinah as part of a contingent from the people of Iraq when a year of drought struck us. Abdullah bin Zubayr began rationing dates to us, and Abdullah bin Umar would pass by us and say, "Do not pair the dates together when eating, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade pairing them unless one of you seeks permission from his companion."
