Abdullah bin Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl in the lower part of Baldah, and this was before revelation had begun to descend upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered him a meal containing meat, but he refused to eat from it and said, "I do not eat what you slaughter at your idol-stones, and I eat only what has been slaughtered with the name of Allah pronounced over it."Abdullah bin Umar related this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
حدثنا عفان حدثنا وهيب حدثنا موسى بن عقبة أخبرني سالم أنه
عن رسول الله ﷺ أنه لقي زيد بن عمرو بن نفيل بأسفل بلدح وذلك قبل أن ينزل على رسول الله ﷺ الوحي فقدم إليه رسول الله ﷺ سفرة فيها لحم فأبى أن يأكل منها ثم قال إني لا آكل ما تذبحون على أنصابكم ولا آكل إلا مما ذكر اسم الله عليه حدث هذا عبد الله بن عمر عن رسول الله ﷺ
Its isnad is sahih. Ibn Saad also narrated it in al-Tabaqat 3/1/276, 277, from Affan bin Muslim from Wahib, and from others, with this same isnad. Bukhari also narrated it at length, 7:108, 109, by way of Fudayl bin Sulayman from Musa bin Uqba.Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl bin Abdul-Uzza bin Riyah, he is the cousin of Umar bin Khattab bin Nufayl bin Abdul-Uzza bin Riyah.Baldah, a valley before Makkah in the direction of Maghrib, its name may be treated as declinable or indeclinable.Al-Sufrah, food that a traveler prepares for himself, most often carried in a round piece of leather, so the name of the food came to be applied to the leather container and it was named after it, just as the water-skin was called "rawiyah," along with other names that were transferred in this way. So al-sufrah in relation to travel food is like al-luhnah for the food eaten in the early morning. This was said by Ibn Athir.
