Its isnad is sahih. Abdul-Rahman is Ibn Mahdi. Salim bin Akhdar Basri is trustworthy, deemed reliable by Ibn Main, Abu Zura, Nasai, and others. Ahmad said, "He is a man of truthfulness and trustworthiness." Sulayman bin Harb said, "Salim bin Akhdar narrated to us, the trustworthy, reliable, and well-regarded one." Bukhari gave his biography in al-Kabir 2/2/123.His name is Salim, in the diminutive form, and a footnote in al-Khulasa states that Nawawi vowelled it in Sharh Muslim with a fatha on the first letter, but this is an error, for everyone else mentions it in the diminutive form, and I have found no disagreement on this. The hadith is an abridgment of 4999.Bukhari related it in al-Kabir, in Salim's biography, through this same route, from Abu Qudama, from Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi.
