During the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we used to refrain from much speech and from being too free in our manner with our wives, fearing that Quran might be revealed concerning us. But when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, we spoke freely.
Its isnad is sahih. Ibn Majah 1:257 narrated it from Muhammad bin Bashshar from Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi, and Bukhari 219 narrated it from Abu Naeem from Sufyan, who is Thawri, with similar wording. Hafiz noted in Fath al-Bari the narration of Ibn Mahdi as found in Ibn Majah, but did not note it as found in the Musnad.
