Whenever we pledged allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ to hear and obey, he would prompt us to add, "to the best of my ability."
حدثنا عبد الرحمن حدثنا سفيان وشعبة عن عبد الله بن دينار
كنا إذا بايعنا النبي ﷺ على السمع يلقننا أو يلقفنا فيما استطعت
Its isnad is sahih. Sufyan here is Thawri, and the hadith is a repetition of 4565, where it is narrated from Sufyan, meaning Ibn Uyayna, from Abdullah bin Dinar, with similar wording. The word "yulqifuna," with the letter fa, means "he teaches us by repetition." Laqf means the quickness in grasping something thrown to you, whether by hand or by tongue. It is said, "a man is thaqif laqif," with the first letter of each word vowelled with fatha and the second with either kasra or sukun, meaning quick and skillful. It is also said to mean quick in understanding what is conveyed to him in speech by tongue, and quick in grasping what is thrown to him by hand.
