The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever is wailed over will be punished on the Day of Resurrection in proportion to the wailing done over him."
حدثنا وكيع عن سعيد بن عبيد عن عبادة بن الوليد بن عبادة
قال رسول الله ﷺ من ينح عليه فإنه يعذب بما نيح عليه يوم القيامة
Its isnad is sahih. Saeed bin Ubayd is Tai, Abu Huzayl, and he is trustworthy. Ahmad, Ibn Main, and others deemed him trustworthy, and Bukhari gave his biography in al-Kabir 2/1/455, quoting Yahya Qattan as saying, "There is no harm in him." Ubada bin Walid bin Ubada bin Samit is a trustworthy successor, deemed trustworthy by Abu Zura and Nasai, and Ibn Abu Hatim gave his biography in 3/1/96.The meaning of the hadith has already appeared at length at 4865 and 4959, and we explained it in detail in the first narration. There we first favored the view that the punishment meant in the hadith is the pain the deceased feels from seeing his family's grief, but this view is contradicted by the narration here, which states that the punishment occurs on the Day of Judgment. Then we mentioned there the position Bukhari chose, that the deceased is punished if wailing was his established practice. This, then, is the correct explanation, and it is the one by which the narrations agree rather than conflict. This is among the proofs of Bukhari's deep understanding and precision in reasoning and deduction, may Allah have mercy on him and be pleased with him.The addition of the word [he said] comes from K and M. In H and M, the wording is "for what is wailed over him," and this has a possible basis in Arabic through interpretation, but we have retained what is established in K.
