Messenger of Allah, tell us about what we do. Is it something already decreed and finished, or something newly begun and originated?He replied, "It is something already decreed and finished. So act, Ibn al-Khattab, for everyone is made easy toward what he was created for. As for the one who is among the people of happiness, he will act in a way that leads to happiness, and as for the one who is among the people of misery, he will act in a way that leads to misery."
حدثنا عبد الرحمن حدثنا شعبة عن عاصم بن عبيد الله قال سمعت سالم بن عبد الله يحدث عن ابن عمر قال
يا رسول الله أرأيت ما نعمل فيه أفي أمر قد فرغ منه أو مبتدإ أو مبتدع قال فيما قد فرغ منه فاعمل يا ابن الخطاب فإن كلا ميسر أما من كان من أهل السعادة فإنه يعمل للسعادة وأما من كان من أهل الشقاء فإنه يعمل للشقاء
Its isnad is daif, due to the weakness of Asim bin Ubaydullah. This hadith has already been mentioned in similar wording in Musnad Umar 196, from Muhammad bin Jafar, from Shubah, with this same isnad, but there it reads, "from Ibn Umar, from Umar," and that is why it was recorded there in his Musnad. This narration, however, came as, "from Ibn Umar, who said, Umar said," and that is why it was recorded in the Musnad of Ibn Umar. Both readings are possible, either that Ibn Umar heard it directly from his father, or that his statement there, "from Umar," means "from the story of Umar." The meaning of the hadith has already been given in a long sahih hadith from the hadith of Umar 311, and see also what has already passed in Musnad Abu Bakr number 19.As for the phrase "one of the people of misery, for he acts toward misery," in (m) it reads "one of the people of wretchedness, for he acts toward wretchedness," which is a variant recorded in the margin of (k). What appears here is recorded in the margin of (m) as a variant reading.
