The Prophet ﷺ said, "The prayers of the night and day are to be performed two by two." Shuba used to narrate this in separate parts.
حدثنا محمد بن جعفر حدثنا شعبة عن يعلى بن عطاء أنه سمع عليا الأزدي يحدث أنه
عن النبي ﷺ أنه قال صلاة الليل والنهار مثنى مثنى وكان شعبة يفرقه
Its isnad is sahih. It is a repetition of 4791, and we have already discussed in detail there their disagreement over whether it should be classed as raised (marfu) or stopped (mawquf), because of the addition of the word "and the day," and we explained there that Bukhari graded it sahih.As for the statement here, "Shubah used to fear it," it means he was afraid, meaning that he was concerned that raising it (as marfu) with this addition might be a mistake. Shubah often exercised strictness in raising hadiths out of caution, not because he considered them daif.
