Ibn Umar received an urgent summons regarding Safiyyah, so on that night he covered the distance of a three-night journey. He kept traveling until evening came, and I said, "The prayer." He continued on without turning, and traveled until it grew dark.Salim, or another man, said to him, "The prayer. Evening has come."He replied, "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was pressed for time on a journey, he would combine these two prayers, and I want to combine them. So keep going."He traveled on until the twilight disappeared, then he dismounted and combined the two prayers.

أن ابن عمر استصرخ على صفية فسار في تلك الليلة مسيرة ثلاث ليال سار حتى أمسى فقلت الصلاة فسار ولم يلتفت فسار حتى أظلم فقال له سالم أو رجل الصلاة وقد أمسيت فقال إن رسول الله ﷺ كان إذا عجل به السير جمع ما بين هاتين الصلاتين وإني أريد أن أجمع بينهما فسيروا فسار حتى غاب الشفق ثم نزل فجمع بينهما
Its chain of transmission is sahih. It is given at greater length in 4472 and 4542. Abu Dawud narrated it in abridged form (1:468) through the route of Hammad from Ayub. Bukhari narrated it (6:97) in similar fashion, also abridged, through the route of Zayd bin Aslam from his father, who was with Ibn Umar during this incident.Munziri said (1163), Tirmidhi narrated it from the hadith of Abdullah bin Umar from Nafi, and said, hasan sahih. Nasai narrated it from the hadith of Salim bin Abdullah bin Umar from his father, with the same meaning but more complete than his version. The Musnad's version of it, with the same meaning, was also narrated by Muslim and Nasai from the hadith of Malik from Nafi.There is a shortcoming here on the part of Munziri, since he did not attribute Salim's narration to Bukhari, who did in fact narrate it in abridged form (2:478) through the route of Zuhri from Salim, matching the Musnad's version (4542). It is also found in Nasai (1:99) with two chains through the route of Nafi, and with one chain through the route of Salim.Safiyyah is the daughter of Abu Ubayd. She was the wife of Abdullah bin Umar, and the sister of Mukhtar bin Abu Ubayd Thaqafi. Her biography is found in al-Isabah (8:131).
