I said to Uthman, "What led you to place Surah al-Anfal, which is among the Mathani, together with Surah Baraah, which is among the Miin, joining them without writing the line Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim between them, and placing them among the seven long surahs? What led you to do that?"He replied, "Time would pass over the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during which surahs containing many verses would be revealed to him. Whenever something was revealed to him, he would call one of those who wrote for him and say, 'Place this in the surah in which such-and-such is mentioned.' When verses were revealed to him, he would say, 'Place these verses in the surah in which such-and-such is mentioned.' And when a single verse was revealed to him, he would say, 'Place this verse in the surah in which such-and-such is mentioned.'Surah al-Anfal was among the earliest revealed in Medina, and Surah Baraah was among the last of the Quran to be revealed. Their subject matter resembled one another, so we thought that it was part of it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away without making clear to us whether it was part of it. For that reason, I joined them together without writing the line Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim between them, and I placed them among the seven long surahs."

قلت لعثمان ما حملكم على أن عمدتم إلى سورة الأنفال وهي من المثاني وإلى سورة براءة وهي من المئين فقرنتم بينهما ولم تكتبوا بينهما سطر بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم فوضعتموها في السبع الطوال فما حملكم على ذلك قال كان رسول الله ﷺ مما يأتي عليه الزمان وهو ينزل عليه من السور ذوات العدد فكان إذا أنزل عليه الشيء دعا بعض من يكتب له فيقول ضعوا هذه في السورة التي يذكر فيها كذا وكذا وإذا أنزلت عليه الآيات قال ضعوا هذه الآيات في السورة التي يذكر فيها كذا وكذا وإذا أنزلت عليه الآية قال ضعوا هذه الآية في السورة التي يذكر فيها كذا وكذا وكانت سورة الأنفال من أوائل ما نزل بالمدينة وكانت سورة براءة من أواخر ما أنزل من القرآن قال فكانت قصتها شبيها بقصتها فظننا أنها منها وقبض رسول الله ﷺ ولم يبين لنا أنها منها فمن أجل ذلك قرنت بينهما ولم أكتب بينهما سطر بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ووضعتها في السبع الطوال
