Umar bin Khattab brought to the Prophet ﷺ a garment of thick silk brocade and said, "Messenger of Allah, you should buy this garment and wear it when delegations of people come to you."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Only one who has no share in the Hereafter wears this."Later, three garments were brought to the Prophet ﷺ, and he sent one to Umar, one to Ali, and one to Usama bin Zayd. Umar came to the Prophet ﷺ with his garment and said, "Messenger of Allah, you have sent this to me, yet I heard you say about it what you said."The Prophet ﷺ answered, "I did not send it to you for you to wear. I sent it to you so that you might sell it or use it as head coverings for the women of your household."Ishaq said in his version of the hadith, Usama came to him wearing the garment, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "I did not send it to you for you to wear. I only sent it to you so that you might sell it." I do not know whether he said to Usama, "or use it as head coverings," or not.Abdullah bin Harith said in his version that he heard Salim bin Abdullah say, I heard Abdullah bin Umar say, Umar found... and he mentioned the meaning of the same report.
حدثنا إسحاق بن سليمان وعبد الله بن الحارث قالا حدثنا حنظلة سمعت سالما يقول سمعت
إن عمر بن الخطاب أتى النبي ﷺ بحلة إستبرق فقال يا رسول الله لو اشتريت هذه الحلة فتلبسها إذا قدم عليك وفود الناس فقال إنما يلبس هذا من لا خلاق له ثم أتي النبي ﷺ بحلل ثلاث فبعث إلى عمر بحلة وإلى علي بحلة وإلى أسامة بن زيد بحلة فأتى عمر بحلته النبي ﷺ فقال يا رسول الله بعثت إلي بهذه وقد سمعتك قلت فيها ما قلت قال إنما بعثت بها إليك لتبيعها أو تشققها لأهلك خمرا قال إسحاق في حديثه وأتاه أسامة وعليه الحلة فقال إني لم أبعث بها إليك لتلبسها إنما بعثت بها إليك لتبيعها ما أدري أقال لأسامة تشققها خمرا أم لا قال عبد الله بن الحارث في حديثه أنه سمع سالم بن عبد الله يقول سمعت عبد الله بن عمر يقول وجد عمر فذكر معناه
