The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Mecca with his companions calling out the talbiyah. Affan said, they were entering the state of ihram for hajj. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever wishes may make it an umrah, except for those who have brought sacrificial animals with them."They asked, "Messenger of Allah, can one of us go off to Mina with semen dripping from him?"He replied, "Yes."The incense burners gave off their fragrance, and Ali bin Abu Talib arrived from Yemen.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "With what did you enter ihram?"Ali replied, "I entered ihram with the same intention as the Prophet ﷺ."He said, "Then proceed, for you share in our sacrificial animal."Humayd said, I related this to Tawsa, and he said, "This is what the people did." Affan said, "Make it an umrah."
حدثنا روح وعفان قالا حدثنا حماد بن سلمة عن حميد قال عفان في حديثه أخبرنا حميد عن بكر بن عبد الله
قدم رسول الله ﷺ مكة وأصحابه ملبين وقال عفان مهلين بالحج فقال رسول الله ﷺ من شاء أن يجعلها عمرة إلا من كان معه الهدي قالوا يا رسول الله أيروح أحدنا إلى مني وذكره يقطر منيا قال نعم وسطعت المجامر وقدم علي بن أبي طالب من اليمن فقال رسول الله ﷺ بم أهللت قال أهللت بما أهل به النبي ﷺ قال روح فإن لك معنا هديا قال حميد فحدثت به طاوسا فقال هكذا فعل القوم قال عفان اجعلها عمرة
Its isnad is sahih. It appears in Majma al-Zawaid 3:233, where it is stated, Ahmad narrated it and its narrators are the narrators of the sahih. It is also stated there, it appears in the sahih in abridged form. It also appears in Muntaqa 2426, where the late Shaykh Muhammad Hamid Al-Faqi comments, this is one of the hadiths reported regarding wiping, about which the eminent scholar Ibn Qayyim said, they are all sahih. It is also one of the hadiths about which Imam Ahmad said, I have eleven hadiths on wiping, all of them sahih.In one narration of Ibn Abu Shayba, "until the incense burners rose up among the men and women," meaning that they burned incense, incense being a type of perfume.
