When Hafsah became a widow after the death of her husband Khunays bin Hudhafah, Umar met Uthman and offered her to him in marriage.Uthman replied, "I have no need for women at present, but I will consider it."Umar then met Abu Bakr and offered her to him as well, but Abu Bakr remained silent. Umar felt resentment toward Abu Bakr over this. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proposed to her and married her.Later, Umar met Abu Bakr and said, "I offered her to Uthman and he turned me down, then I offered her to you and you said nothing to me. I was more angered with you than I was with Uthman, even though he had refused me."Abu Bakr said, "The matter of her marriage had already been mentioned, and it was a secret, so I disliked disclosing what had been confided to me."

Its isnad is sahih. Sufyan bin Husayn is Wasiti, and we have already discussed him under 67 and 4634. We add here that Bukhari mentioned him in al-Kabir 2/2/90 without noting any criticism of him, and did not fault his narration from Zuhri.The hadith has already appeared at length in the Musnad of Umar, through the route of Mamar from Zuhri from Salim from Ibn Umar from Umar, under number 74. So here it is a mursal report from a companion, because Ibn Umar actually heard it from his father Umar, as he explicitly states in the narration of Nasai 2:77, from Zuhri from Salim, that he heard Abdullah bin Umar report that Umar bin Khattab had told them, then he narrated the hadith. Nasai likewise narrated it 2:75-76 in the same manner as the preceding Musnad narration, through the route of Mamar from Zuhri from Salim from Ibn Umar from Umar.Bukhari narrated it 9:152-153, 160, 172, both at length and in abridged form, all through the route of Zuhri. Its outward form suggests it is from the hadith of Abdullah bin Umar, but its context indicates that he actually heard it from his father.
