I was asked about the Mutalaineen, whether they should be separated from one another, during the rule of Ibn Zubayr. I did not know what to say, so I rose from my place and went to the house of Ibn Umar.I said, "Abu Abdul-Rahman, the Mutalaineen, are they to be separated?"He replied, "Glory be to Allah. The first person to ask about this was so-and-so, son of so-and-so. He said, 'Messenger of Allah, what is your view of a man who sees his wife committing a vile act? If he speaks, he speaks of something terrible, and if he remains silent, he remains silent over the same.'The Prophet remained silent and did not answer him. Some time later, the man came back to him and said, 'What I asked you about, I have been afflicted with it.'So Allah revealed these verses in Surah an-Nur, "And those who accuse their wives" until His statement "that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he is of the truthful" [Nur 24:6–9].The Prophet began with the man, admonishing him, reminding him, and informing him that the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter. The man said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, I have not lied about her."Then he turned to the woman, admonishing her, reminding her, and informing her that the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter. She said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, he is a liar."He began with the man, who bore witness four times by Allah that he was among the truthful, and the fifth, that the curse of Allah be upon him if he was among the liars. Then he turned to the woman, who bore witness four times by Allah that he was among the liars, and the fifth, that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he was among the truthful. Then he separated them."
Its isnad is sahih. Abdul-Malik bin Abu Sulayman is al-Fazari. Muslim narrated the hadith (1:436) through Ibn Numayr and through Isa bin Yunus, both from Abdul-Malik, with this isnad. Ibn Kathir cited it in his tafsir (6:64) from this place, and said, "Nasai narrated it in the tafsir from the hadith of Abdul-Malik bin Abu Sulayman, with it. Bukhari and Muslim both narrated it in the Sahihayn from the hadith of Saeed bin Jubayr from Ibn Abbas."This is what he said, but in Sahih Muslim, as we mentioned, it is from the hadith of Saeed bin Jubayr from Ibn Umar, and Bukhari narrated it in several places in abridged form, through more than one route, from the hadith of Saeed bin Jubayr from Ibn Umar. I think this is an oversight on the part of Hafiz bin Kathir.Regarding "during the governorship of Ibn Zubayr", in Muslim it reads "during the governorship of Musab", which is a clear printing error. The correct reading is confirmed in the Istanbul printing of Sahih Muslim (4:206). See also 4477, 4527, 4603, 4604.
