The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a spot of phlegm on the wall of the mosque facing the qiblah, so he scraped it off and applied perfume to the spot.
حدثنا يحيى عن ابن أبي رواد حدثني نافع
أن رسول الله ﷺ رأى نخامة في قبلة المسجد فحكها وخلق مكانها
Its isnad is sahih. Ibn Abu Rawwad is Abdul-Aziz bin Abu Rawwad of Makkah, the freed slave of Muhallab bin Abu Sufra. He is trustworthy. Yahya Qattan and Ibn Main and others confirmed his reliability. Some spoke against him because of his view on Irja, and whoever weakened him for any other reason has erred. Yahya Qattan said, "Abdul-Aziz is trustworthy in hadith. His hadith should not be abandoned because of an opinion in which he erred." Abu Hatim said, "He is truthful and trustworthy in hadith, devoted in worship." Ibn Jurayj used to honor and revere him.The meaning of this hadith has already passed at 4509 through the narration of Ayub from Nafi, and we mentioned there that Abu Dawud narrated it with an addition, that he called for saffron and smeared it on it. Abu Dawud also said afterward, at 1:179, "Yahya bin Salim mentioned, from Ubaydullah, from Nafi, the word khaluq." This is a reference to a narration similar to the one here, in which Ubaydullah bin Umar corroborates Ibn Abu Rawwad, from Nafi, in mentioning khaluq. As for his statement "and perfumed its place," with the lam doubled, it means he anointed it with khaluq, with the kha vowelled fatha, which is a kind of perfume, and it has also been said to be saffron.
