The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a ring of gold made for himself, and he used to wear it with the stone facing the inside of his palm. The people then had similar rings made for themselves, so he discarded his and had one made of silver instead.
حدثنا يحيى عن عبيد الله عن نافع
اتخذ رسول الله ﷺ خاتما من ذهب وكان يجعل فصه مما يلي كفه فاتخذه الناس فرمى به واتخذ خاتما من ورق
Its isnad is sahih. Abu Dawud narrated it at greater length than this, 4:142, through Abu Usama from Ubaydullah from Nafi, and through Ibn Uyayna from Ayub bin Musa from Nafi. Munziri attributed it in similar wording to Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi, and Nasai.Al-khatam (the ring), with the ta pronounced either with fatha or kasra, both forms being valid. Al-wariq, with the waw carrying fatha and the ra carrying kasra, means silver. See 4734.
