The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would recite a surah to us, and when he reached a verse of prostration, he would prostrate and we would prostrate with him, until one of us could not find a spot to place his forehead.
حدثنا يحيى عن عبيد الله أخبرني نافع
كان رسول الله ﷺ يقرأ علينا السورة فيقرأ السجدة فيسجد ونسجد معه حتى ما يجد أحدنا مكانا لموضع جبهته
This is a great and weighty principle among the principles of governance. We do not know of it appearing in any legal code or any set of laws in this precise, sound, and clearly defined form, which limits the authority of the ruler while preserving the religion and dignity of the ruled.Kings and princes, and governments in countries that have organized governments and laws, have grown accustomed to commanding actions which the one commanded feels he has no choice but to carry out. And the subjects, under both kinds of rulers, have come to obey whatever they are commanded
