Ghaylan bin Salama Thaqafi embraced Islam while he had ten wives, so the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Choose four of them."During the time of Umar, he divorced his wives and divided his wealth among his sons. When this news reached Umar, he said, "I suspect that Satan, among the things he eavesdrops on, has heard of your death and cast that into your heart. Perhaps you will only remain alive for a short while. By Allah, you shall take back your wives and reclaim your wealth, or I will give them inheritance from you, and I will order that your grave be stoned just as the grave of Abu Righal was stoned."
حدثنا إسماعيل ومحمد بن جعفر قالا حدثنا معمر عن الزهري قال ابن جعفر في حديثه أخبرنا ابن شهاب
أن غيلان بن سلمة الثقفي أسلم وتحته عشر نسوة فقال له النبي ﷺ اختر منهن أربعا فلما كان في عهد عمر طلق نساءه وقسم ماله بين بنيه فبلغ ذلك عمر فقال إني لأظن الشيطان فيما يسترق من السمع سمع بموتك فقذفه في نفسك ولعلك أن لا تمكث إلا قليلا وايم الله لتراجعن نساءك ولترجعن في مالك أو لأورثهن منك ولآمرن بقبرك فيرجم كما رجم قبر أبي رغال
Its chain of transmission is sahih. This is the fuller version of 4609, and the discussion of it has already been given in detail, where we pointed to this matter. Abu Rughal, with a kasrah on the ra and a light (unaspirated) ghayn, in Qamus, in Sunan Abu Dawud, Dalail Nubuwwah, and other sources, from Ibn Umar, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when we went out with him to Taif, and we passed by a grave. He said, 'This is the grave of Abu Rughal.'" He was the father of Thaqif, and he was from Thamud, and he used to be protected within this sacred territory. When he left it, the punishment that struck his people struck him at this very place, and he was buried there. In Lisan Arab there are other accounts as well.What Ghaylan Thaqafi did was a reversion to the practices of the pre-Islamic era, depriving women of their inheritance. Islam came to abolish that, and to give every rightful claimant his due. That is why he was rebuked, reprimanded, and threatened, and the right was restored to its proper place.Let this be a lesson for any Muslim who does something similar, reverting to the first ignorance and acting contrary to what Allah and His Messenger have commanded, whether they do so by way of a gift, or by a fictitious sale, or by an endowment. All of this is wrong, something Allah does not accept, and Muslims are obligated to condemn it and reverse it to whatever extent they are able.
