He is not one of us who strikes his cheeks, tears his garments, or calls out with the call of the Days of Ignorance.Sulayman said, I believe he traced it back to the Prophet ﷺ.
حدثنا محمد بن جعفر حدثنا شعبة عن سليمان قال سمعت عبد الله بن مرة عن مسروق
ليس منا من ضرب الخدود وشق الجيوب أو دعا بدعوى الجاهلية قال سليمان وأحسبه قد رفعه إلى النبي ﷺ
Its isnad is sahih. Amash was uncertain about it being marfu, perhaps this was only when he narrated it to Shubah, for Waki (4111) and Abu Muawiya (4361) both narrated it from Amash as marfu, without any uncertainty. This is supported by the narration of Zubayd, from Ibrahim, from Masruq, from Abdullah, also as marfu (3658, 4215).
