Zirr said, "I rarely missed Ibn Masud on a Thursday," or, "I seldom missed Ibn Masud on a Thursday." Ibn Abu Adi said, "On a Thursday evening, I would always go to him."Zirr continued, "I never once heard him attribute anything by saying, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said.' Then one evening he said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,'" Ibn Abu Adi said, "He said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say,'" and then he lowered his head.Zirr said, "I looked at him as he stood there, the buttons of his shirt undone, his eyes brimming with tears, and the veins of his neck swollen. Then he said, 'Or close to that, or beyond that, or near to that, or something resembling that.'"
Its isnad is sahih. Something similar in meaning has already appeared from Muslim Batin, from Abu Abdul-Rahman Sulami, from Ibn Masud [3670], and we noted there the narration of Muslim Batin from Ibrahim Taymi, from his father, from Amr bin Maymun, and that Ibn Majah and others narrated it, with this isnad. See also [4015].
