The Prophet ﷺ said, "The first to release sawaib camels and worship idols was the father of Khuza, Amr bin Amir, and I saw him dragging his intestines in the Fire."
Its chain of transmission is daif, like the one before it. It is in Majma al-Zawaid 1:116, where it says, "Ahmad narrated it, and it contains Ibrahim Hijri, who is daif." But the content of the hadith is sahih, narrated by Ahmad from the hadith of Abu Hurairah, and it will come up at 7696. Bukhari also narrated it, 8:213. Muslim and others also narrated it. See Jamharat Ansab by Ibn Hazm, 222–223, and our commentary on it there.Sawaib. Ibn Athir said, a man would, if he vowed upon returning from a journey or recovering from an illness or something similar, say, "My she-camel is a sabah," meaning she would not be denied water or pasture, nor milked nor ridden. And a man, if he freed a slave, would say, "He is sabah," meaning there would be no blood-money obligation between them nor inheritance. Its origin comes from tasyib of animals, which is letting them loose to go and come as they please. This is what Allah forbade in His saying, "Allah has not decreed anything like bahirah or sabah" [Maidah 5:103].Something similar to this is what the ignorant, misguided people do in our time, letting loose a bull or cow or animal as a vow to those they claim have spiritual authority over them, like Ahmad Badawi and Ibrahim Dasuqi, thereby reverting to the polytheism of pre-Islamic ignorance. We ask Allah for safety.
