Ashari was once consulted about the inheritance of a daughter, a son's daughter, and a full sister. He assigned half to the daughter and the remainder to the sister, giving nothing to the son's daughter. The people then went to Ibn Masud and informed him of this ruling.Ibn Masud said, "I would indeed have gone astray and would not be among the rightly guided if I were to follow his opinion and abandon the ruling of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Then Ibn Masud said, "The daughter receives half, the son's daughter receives a sixth, and what remains goes to the sister."
