We were sitting on Friday evening in the mosque when a man from the Ansar said, "If one of us were to see a man with his wife and kill him, you would put him to death. If he spoke up, you would flog him. And if he kept silent, he would be silent over a burning rage. By Allah, if I live until morning, I will surely ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about this."So he asked him, saying, "Messenger of Allah, if one of us sees a man with his wife and kills him, you put him to death. If he speaks up, you flog him. And if he stays silent, he stays silent over a burning rage. O Allah, render judgment."Then the verse of lian was revealed, and that man was the first to be tested by it.

Its isnad is sahih. Ibn Kathir quoted it in his Tafsir 6:65 from this passage, and said, "Only Muslim narrated it," reporting it through several routes from Sulayman bin Mihran Amash. It appears in Sahih Muslim with similar wording, 1:437, and it will also come again at 4281. See also 2131.
