The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me a surah from among the thirty, from the family of Ha-Mim, meaning al-Ahqaf. He said, "Whenever a surah had more than thirty verses, it was called one of the thirty."He continued, "I went out to the mosque, and there was a man reciting it differently from how I had been taught."I asked him, "Who taught you this?"He replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Then I said to another man, "Recite it." He recited it differently from both my recitation and my companion's recitation. So I took the two of them to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, these two recite differently from me."The Prophet ﷺ became angry, and his face changed color. He said, "Those who came before you were destroyed only by disagreement."Zirr said, A man was with him, and that man said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commands each of you to recite as he was taught, for what destroyed those before you was disagreement."Abdullah said, I do not know whether it was something the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had confided to him privately, or whether he simply knew what was on the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ mind.He said, And the man was Ali bin Abu Talib, may the blessings of Allah be upon him.
