A man came to Abdullah bin Masud and said, "I recited the Mufassal portion of the Quran tonight in a single rakah."Ibn Masud replied, "That is reciting like the rushed scattering of poetry, or like the hasty scattering of dried dates. The Quran was divided into sections so that you would pause between them. I know well the paired surahs that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite together, twenty surahs paired two by two, each pair in one rakah." Among them he mentioned ar-Rahman with an-Najm according to the arrangement of Ibn Masud's recitation, every two surahs in a single rakah, and he mentioned ad-Dukhan paired with Amma Yatasaalun in one rakah.

أنه أتى عبد الله بن مسعود فقال قرأت المفصل الليلة في ركعة فقال هذا مثل هذ الشعر أو نثرا مثل نثر الدقل إنما فصل لتفصلوا لقد علمت النظائر التي كان رسول الله ﷺ يقرن عشرين سورة الرحمن والنجم على تأليف ابن مسعود كل سورتين في ركعة وذكر الدخان وعم يتساءلون في ركعة
