A woman came to Ibn Masud and said, "I have been told that you forbid the wasilah."He replied, "Yes."She asked, "Is this something you find in the Book of Allah, or did you hear it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"He said, "I find it in the Book of Allah and from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."She said, "By Allah, I have examined everything between the two covers of the Mushaf, and I have not found in it what you say."He asked, "Have you not found in it 'Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it' [Hashr 59:7]?"She said, "Yes."He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbid the namisah, the washirah, the wasilah, and the washimah, except for a medical condition."The woman said, "Perhaps it exists among some of your own women."He said to her, "Go in and see."She went in, then came out and said, "I saw nothing wrong."He said, "Then you have not remembered the counsel of the righteous servant, 'I do not intend to differ from you by doing what I forbid you from' [Hud 11:88]."
حدثنا عبد الوهاب بن عطاء أنبأنا سعيد بن أبي عروبة عن قتادة عن عزرة عن الحسن العرني عن يحيى بن الجزار
أن امرأة جاءت إلى ابن مسعود فقالت أنبئت أنك تنهى عن الواصلة قال نعم فقالت أشيء تجده في كتاب الله أم سمعته عن رسول الله ﷺ فقال أجده في كتاب الله وعن رسول الله ﷺ فقالت والله لقد تصفحت ما بين دفتي المصحف فما وجدت فيه الذي تقول قال فهل وجدت فيه {ما آتاكم الرسول فخذوه وما نهاكم عنه فانتهوا} قالت نعم قال فإني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ نهى عن النامصة والواشرة والواصلة والواشمة إلا من داء قالت المرأة فلعله في بعض نسائك قال لها ادخلي فدخلت ثم خرجت فقالت ما رأيت بأسا قال ما حفظت إذا وصية العبد الصالح {وما أريد أن أخالفكم إلى ما أنهاكم عنه}
Its isnad is sahih. Nasai related it in 2:281 through the route of Khalaf bin Musa from his father, from Qatada, but he did not give the full wording, only carrying it up to his saying, "I heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I find it in the Book of Allah," then he said, "and he related the rest of the hadith."
