The moon split during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so much so that I saw the mountain through the gap between the two halves of the moon.
حدثنا مؤمل حدثنا إسرائيل عن سماك عن إبراهيم عن الأسود
انشق القمر على عهد رسول الله ﷺ حتى رأيت الجبل من بين فرجتي القمر
Its isnad is sahih. Ibn Kathir cited it in al-Tarikh 3:121, saying, "This is how Ibn Jareer narrated it, from the hadith of Asbat, from Simak, in this manner." He also cited it in his tafsir 8:130, from Musnad and Tafsir Tabari. See 3583.
