Abdullah bin Masud reported,

I came upon Abu Jahl when he had been wounded and his leg had been cut off. I began striking him with my sword, but it had no effect on him.Sharik was asked during the narration, "Was he defending himself with his sword?"He replied, "Yes."He continued, "I kept at it until I took his sword and struck him with it until I killed him."Then he said, "I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'Abu Jahl has been killed.'"Sharik may have said, "I have killed Abu Jahl."The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Did you see him yourself?"I answered, "Yes."He asked twice, "By Allah?"I answered, "Yes."He said, "Then go, so that I may look at him."So he went, and the Prophet ﷺ came to him. The sun had already begun to alter his appearance. He gave orders concerning him and his companions, and they were dragged until they were cast into the well.He said, "The people of the well were pursued with a curse," and he said, "This man was the Pharaoh of this nation."
