Ibn Yamar reported,

I said to Ibn Umar رضي الله عنه, "We travel through distant lands and meet people who say there is no divine decree."Ibn Umar replied, "When you meet them, inform them that Abdullah bin Umar disowns them and that they are disowned by him." He repeated this three times. Then he began to relate the following. While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a man came forward, and he described his appearance. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Come closer." The man drew nearer. He said again, "Come closer," and the man drew nearer. He said once more, "Come closer," until the man's knees nearly touched the knees of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.The man said, "Messenger of Allah, tell me what is faith," or "tell me about faith."He answered, "That you believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day, and that you believe in divine decree." Sufyan said, "I think he said, 'both its good and its evil.'"The man asked, "What is Islam?"He answered, "Establishing the prayer, giving the zakat, pilgrimage to the House, fasting the month of Ramadan, and bathing after major impurity."After each answer the man said, "You have spoken the truth, you have spoken the truth."The people present said, "We have never seen anyone show more reverence to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ than this man, as though he were instructing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Then he said, "Messenger of Allah, tell me about excellence."He answered, "That you worship Allah," or "that you worship Him as though you see Him, for though you do not see Him, He sees you."After each reply we said, "We have never seen anyone show more reverence to the Messenger of Allah than this man," and he kept saying, "You have spoken the truth, you have spoken the truth."The man said, "Tell me about the Hour."He answered, "The one questioned about it knows no more than the one asking."The man said, "You have spoken the truth." He said this many times, and we kept saying, "We have never seen anyone show more reverence to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ than this man." Then he turned and went away.Sufyan said, "It reached me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Look for him.' But they could not find him. He said, 'That was Jibreel, who came to you to teach you your religion. He has never come to me in any form without my recognizing him, except for this form.'"
