Masruq reported,

A man came to Abdullah and said, "I left behind in the mosque a man interpreting the Quran by his own opinion. He says concerning this verse, 'The day the sky will bring a visible smoke' to the end of it, that on the Day of Resurrection a smoke will envelop them, taking hold of their breath until it afflicts them like a head cold."Abdullah replied, "Whoever knows something, let him speak of it, and whoever does not know, let him say, 'Allah knows best.' For it is part of a man's understanding that he says, regarding what he does not know, 'Allah knows best.'This was simply because when Quraysh defied the Prophet ﷺ, he supplicated against them with years like the years of Yusuf. So a drought struck them and they suffered hardship until they ate bones, and a man would look toward the sky and see between himself and the sky something like smoke from his exhaustion. So Allah revealed, 'So watch for the day when the sky will bring a visible smoke covering the people. This is a painful punishment' [Dukhan 44:10–11].Then someone came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'Messenger of Allah, ask Allah for rain on behalf of Mudar, for they have perished.' So he supplicated for them, and Allah revealed, 'Indeed, We will remove the punishment' [Dukhan 44:15].But when prosperity reached them, they returned to their old ways, so the verse was revealed, 'The day We will strike with the greatest assault. Indeed, We will take retribution' [Dukhan 44:16]. That was the day of Badr."

حدثنا أبو معاوية حدثنا الأعمش عن مسلم

عن مسروق قال

جاء رجل إلى عبد الله فقال إني تركت في المسجد رجلا يفسر القرآن برأيه يقول في هذه الآية {يوم تأتي السماء بدخان مبين} إلى آخرها يغشاهم يوم القيامة دخان يأخذ بأنفاسهم حتى يصيبهم منه كهيئة الزكام قال فقال عبد الله من علم علما فليقل به ومن لم يعلم فليقل الله أعلم فإن من فقه الرجل أن يقول لما لا يعلم الله أعلم إنما كان هذا لأن قريشا لما استعصت على النبي ﷺ دعا عليهم بسنين كسني يوسف فأصابهم قحط وجهدوا حتى أكلوا العظام وجعل الرجل ينظر إلى السماء فينظر ما بينه وبين السماء كهيئة الدخان من الجهد فأنزل الله عز وجل {فارتقب يوم تأتي السماء بدخان مبين يغشى الناس هذا عذاب أليم} فأتى رسول الله ﷺ فقيل يا رسول الله استسق الله لمضر فإنهم قد هلكوا قال فدعا لهم فأنزل الله عز وجل {إنا كاشفو العذاب} فلما أصابهم المرة الثانية عادوا فنزلت {يوم نبطش البطشة الكبرى إنا منتقمون} يوم بدر
