Its isnad is sahih. Ziyad bin Abu Maryam is trustworthy. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat, and Bukhari gave his biography in Tarikh al-Kabir, 1/2/341-343, saying, Ziyad bin Abu Maryam, the freed slave of Uthman bin Affan al-Qurashi, heard from Abu Musa, and Maymun bin Mihran narrated from him.Sadaqah said, Ibn Uyayna informed us, from Abdul-Kareem, from Ziyad bin Abu Maryam, "Saeed bin Jubayr would feel too shy to interpret dreams while I was present."Ibrahim said, from Attab, from Khaseef, "Anas bin Malik, Abu Ubayda, and Ziyad bin Abu Maryam came to visit Marwan in the region of Jazira."Abu Naeem said, Sufyan narrated to us, from Abdul-Kareem, from Ziyad bin Abu Maryam, from Abdullah bin Maqal, "My father asked Abdullah bin Masud, 'Did you hear the Prophet ﷺ say, "Regret is repentance"?' He said, 'Yes.'"Abu Asim said, from Sufyan and Ibn Jurayj, he abridged it.Humaydi said, Sufyan narrated to us, saying, Abdul-Kareem narrated to us, from Ziyad bin Abu Maryam, from Abdullah bin Maqal, "I went in with my father to see Abdullah."Sufyan said, Abu Saeed narrated to me, from Abdullah bin Maqal, from Ibn Masud, from the Prophet ﷺ.Sufyan said, "What Abdul-Kareem narrated to me is dearer to me, because he has a better memory than Abu Saeed."Qutayba said, Sufyan narrated to us, saying, Abu Saeed narrated to us, from Abdullah bin Maqal, from Ibn Masud, as his own statement.Ahmad bin Yunus said, Abu Bakr narrated to us, saying, Umar bin Saeed narrated to me, from Abdul-Kareem, from Ziyad bin Abu Maryam, from Ibn Maqal, "I heard my father asking Abdullah, 'Did you hear the Prophet ﷺ?'"Ibn Salam said, Mamar narrated to us, saying, Khaseef narrated to us, from Ziyad bin Abu Maryam, with this same wording.Malik bin Ismail said, Sharik narrated to us, from Abdul-Kareem, from Ziyad bin Jarrah, from Ibn Maqal, from Ibn Masud, from the Prophet ﷺ.Bukhari mentioned many chains for this hadith, indicating that its narrator from Ibn Maqal is Ziyad bin Abu Maryam. Then, at the end, he narrated a chain in which Ziyad bin Jarrah appears in place of Ziyad bin Abu Maryam, and Daraqutni erred here, supposing that Bukhari meant by this that Ziyad bin Abu Maryam is the same person as Ziyad bin Jarrah, and that Abu Maryam's actual name was Jarrah. The mistake in his view is clear, because Bukhari had already given Ziyad bin Jarrah his own separate biography earlier, at 2/1/317. What Bukhari intended by this arrangement was only to show the disagreement among the narrators over whether the hadith comes from this man or that one. The more correct view is that it comes from Ziyad bin Abu Maryam, since those who transmitted it that way are more numerous and have better memory.Maqal is pronounced with a fatha on the mim, a sukun on the plain ain, and a kasra on the qaf. Muqarrin is pronounced with a damma on the mim, a fatha on the qaf, and a kasra on the doubled ra.
