Yahya was not sure whether the narrator was Abdullah or Fadl. He said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me on the morning of Aqaba, while he was standing on his mount, "Pick up some pebbles for me." So I picked up for him some small pebbles, the size used for flicking, and placed them in his hand.He said, "With pebbles like these," repeating it twice. He gestured with his hand, and Yahya indicated that he raised it.Then he said, "Beware of going to extremes, for those before you were destroyed only because of going to extremes in religion."
Its isnad is sahih. Ismail is Ibn Ulaya. Awf is Ibn Abu Jamila the Arabi.Awf's uncertainty here about whether Ibn Abbas is Abdullah or his brother Fadl does not affect the matter, because Abu Aliyah was an early Tabii who witnessed the Jahiliyyah, and narrated from Companions earlier than Fadl. The hadith is a repetition of 1851.
