When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Madinah, he found the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. He asked, "What is this?"They replied, "This is a great day. It is the day on which Allah saved Musa and drowned the people of Pharaoh, so Musa fasted it in gratitude."The Prophet ﷺ said, "I have a greater claim to Musa and more right to fast this day than they do." So he fasted it and ordered that it be fasted.
حدثنا عبد الرزاق حدثنا معمر عن أيوب عن ابن سعيد بن جبير عن أبيه
قدم رسول الله ﷺ المدينة فوجد يهود يصومون يوم عاشوراء فقال ما هذا فقالوا هذا يوم عظيم يوم نجى الله موسى وأغرق آل فرعون فصامه موسى شكرا قال النبي ﷺ فإني أولى بموسى وأحق بصيامه فصامه وأمر بصيامه
