The Prophet ﷺ went to relieve himself, and water was placed for his ablution. When he came out, he asked, "Who placed this here?"It was said, "Ibn Abbas."He said, "O Allah, give him understanding of the religion."
Its isnad is sahih. Hashim is Ibn Qasim Abu Nadr. Warqa is Ibn Umar Yashkuri. Ubaydullah bin Abu Yazid is the Makkan, freedman of the family of Qaridh, discussed previously at 604 and 1937.In both original manuscripts it reads Abdullah Ibn Zayd, which is certainly an error. We have therefore corrected it despite the agreement of both manuscripts on it, because the hadith was narrated by Bukhari (1:214) and Muslim (2:257), both of them through Hashim bin Qasim, from Warqa, from Ubaydullah bin Abu Yazid. I have found nothing indicating that Warqa narrates from anyone other than Ubaydullah bin Abu Yazid among those who narrate from Ibn Abbas. The hadith is abridged at 2881, and see also 3033. In manuscript H it reads, "O Allah, grant him understanding," without mentioning "in religion," and we have corrected it based on manuscript K.
