Abdullah bin Umar reported,

Umar was asked, "Will you not appoint a successor?"He replied, "If I leave the matter without appointing one, then someone better than me has done the same, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. And if I appoint a successor, then someone better than me has done so, Abu Bakr ."
