When Najdah al-Haruri broke away during the conflict involving Ibn Zubayr, he sent a message to Ibn Abbas asking him about the share designated for the kinsfolk and to whom he considered it should go.Ibn Abbas replied, "It belongs to us, the close relatives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ allocated it to them. Umar once offered us something from it, but we saw that what he offered fell short of our right, so we returned it to him and refused to accept it."What Umar had offered them was that he would help with the marriage expenses of their unmarried, settle the debts of those among them in debt, and give to their poor, but he refused to give them more than that.
