Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting in one of his gatherings when Jibreel عليه السلام came to him. He sat down before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, placing his palms upon the Prophet's knees, and said, "Messenger of Allah, tell me, what is Islam?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Islam is that you surrender your face to Allah, and bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, who has no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger."Jibreel asked, "If I do that, am I then a Muslim?"He answered, "If you do that, then you have submitted."Jibreel said, "Messenger of Allah, then tell me, what is faith?"He replied, "Faith is that you believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets, that you believe in death and in life after death, that you believe in Paradise and the Fire, the reckoning and the scales, and that you believe in destiny entirely, both its good and its evil."Jibreel asked, "If I do that, have I then believed?"He answered, "If you do that, then you have believed."Jibreel said, "Messenger of Allah, tell me, what is excellence?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Excellence is that you act for Allah as though you see Him, for even if you do not see Him, He surely sees you."Jibreel said, "Messenger of Allah, then tell me, when will the Hour come?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Glory be to Allah. That is among five things belonging to the unseen which none knows but He. 'Indeed, with Allah is knowledge of the Hour. He sends down the rain, and He knows what is in the wombs. No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is Knowing, Aware' [Luqman 31:34]. But if you wish, I will tell you of the signs that come before it."Jibreel said, "Yes, Messenger of Allah, tell me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When you see the slave woman giving birth to her mistress or her master, and you see the owners of sheep competing with one another in raising tall buildings, and you see the barefoot, the hungry, and the destitute becoming the leaders of the people, that is one of the marks of the Hour and one of its portents."Jibreel asked, "Messenger of Allah, who are the owners of sheep, and who are the barefoot, the hungry, and the destitute?"He replied, "The Arabs."
