We asked Ibn Abbas about squatting on one's feet, and he said, "It is the Sunnah."We said, "We consider it harsh on the feet."Ibn Abbas replied, "It is the Sunnah of your Prophet ﷺ."
Its isnad is sahih. Muslim narrated it in 1:150-151, Abu Dawud in 1:313-314, and Tirmidhi in 1:235, all of them through the route of Ibn Jurayj.Regarding the word "rijl" (foot), we chose to vocalize it with kasra on the ra and sukun on the jim, meaning "the foot," following Ibn Abdul-Barr. The majority vocalized it with fatha on the ra and damma on the jim, and Nawawi preferred this in his commentary on Muslim, 5:19. See Maalim Sunan by Khattabi, 1:208-209, and our commentary on Tirmidhi, 2:72-76, and see what follows at 2857.
