The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "On the night I was taken on the night journey, and morning came while I was in Mecca, I felt distressed about my situation and knew that the people would call me a liar." So he sat apart, grieving. Then the enemy of Allah, Abu Jahl, passed by and came and sat with him. Mockingly, he said to him, "Has anything happened?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Yes."Abu Jahl asked, "What is it?"He said, "I was taken on a night journey tonight."Abu Jahl asked, "To where?"He answered, "To Bayt al-Maqdis."Abu Jahl said, "Then you woke up here among us this morning?"He replied, "Yes."Abu Jahl did not let on that he disbelieved him, fearing that the Prophet would deny the account when he called his people to hear it. So he said, "What do you think, if I summon your people, will you tell them what you have just told me?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Yes."So Abu Jahl called out, "Gather round, people of Banu Kaab bin Luayy!"The gathered groups broke up and came over until they sat down with the two of them. Abu Jahl said, "Tell your people what you told me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I was taken on a night journey tonight."They asked, "To where?"He said, "To Bayt al-Maqdis."They said, "Then you woke up here among us this morning?"He answered, "Yes."Some clapped their hands in astonishment, and others put their hands on their heads, amazed at what they considered a lie. They said, "Can you describe the mosque for us?" Among the people were some who had traveled to that land and seen the mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I began to describe it, and I kept describing it until some of the description became confused for me. Then the mosque was brought and placed before my eyes, near the house of Uqal or Aqeel, and I described it while looking at it." He added, "There were also other features I did not memorize."The people said, "As for the description, by Allah, he got it right."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Zurara bin Awfa Amiri Harshi (with fatha on the ha and the ra), the judge of Basra, was a trustworthy successor, and Bukhari mentioned him in al-Kabir 1/401.The hadith is found in the tafsir of Ibn Kathir 5:128, taken from this same passage, where he said, "Nasai also narrated it from the hadith of Awf bin Abu Jameela, who is the Bedouin, with the same wording."Bayhaqi narrated it from the hadith of Nadr bin Shumayl and Hawdha, from Awf, who is Ibn Abu Jameela the Bedouin, one of the trustworthy leading scholars. It is also found in Majma al-Zawaid 1:64-65, where it is said, "Ahmad, Bazzar, and Tabarani narrated it in al-Kabir and al-Awsat, and the men of Ahmad's chain are the men of the sahih."Suyuti, in al-Durr al-Manthur 4:155, also attributed it to Ibn Abu Shayba, Ibn Mardawayh, Abu Naeem in al-Dalail, Diya in al-Mukhtara, and Ibn Asakir with a sahih chain. See also 3546."Faziat bi amri" means, it became severe upon me and terrified me."Bayna zahranayna" (among us) - Ibn Athir said regarding a hadith, "So they settled among them (bayna zahranayhim)," this expression is repeated frequently in hadith, and its meaning is that they settled among them by way of support and reliance upon them. An alif and a fatha-bearing nun were added to it for emphasis, and its meaning is that a "back" (zahr) of them was in front of him and a "back" of them was behind him, so he was enclosed on both sides, and on all his sides, when it is said "bayna azhurihim." The expression then became so widely used that it came to be applied generally to settling or residing among a people, without restriction.
