Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

When Allah revealed "And warn your nearest kin" [Shuara 26:214], the Prophet ﷺ went to Safa, climbed upon it, and cried out a warning. The people gathered around him, some coming in person and others sending a messenger in their place.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Sons of Abdul-Muttalib, sons of Fihr, sons of Luayy, tell me this. If I informed you that cavalry were at the foot of this mountain preparing to raid you, would you believe me?"They said, "Yes."He said, "Then I am a warner to you of a severe punishment that lies just ahead."Abu Lahab said, "May you perish for the rest of your days. Is this all you called us for?"So Allah revealed "May the hands of Abu Lahab perish, and may he perish" [Masad 111:1].

حدثنا عبد الله بن نمير عن الأعمش عن عمرو بن مرة عن سعيد بن جبير

عن ابن عباس قال

لما أنزل الله عز وجل {وأنذر عشيرتك الأقربين} قال أتى النبي ﷺ الصفا فصعد عليه ثم نادى يا صباحاه فاجتمع الناس إليه بين رجل يجيء إليه وبين رجل يبعث رسوله فقال رسول الله ﷺ يا بني عبد المطلب يا بني فهر يا بني لؤي أرأيتم لو أخبرتكم أن خيلا بسفح هذا الجبل تريد أن تغير عليكم صدقتموني قالوا نعم قال فإني نذير لكم بين يدي عذاب شديد فقال أبو لهب تبا لك سائر اليوم أما دعوتنا إلا لهذا فأنزل الله عز وجل {تبت يدا أبي لهب وتب}
