I was sleeping in the mosque on a cloak of mine when it was stolen. We caught the thief and brought him to the Prophet ﷺ, who ordered that his hand be cut off.I said, "Messenger of Allah, over a cloak worth thirty dirhams? I will give it to him as a gift, or sell it to him."He replied, "Why did you not do that before bringing him to me?"

كنت نائما في المسجد على خميصة لي فسرقت فأخذنا السارق فرفعناه إلى النبي ﷺ فأمر بقطعه فقلت يا رسول الله أفي خميصتي ثمن ثلاثين درهما أنا أهبها له أو أبيعها له قال فهلا كان قبل أن تأتيني به
