She had been married to Ubaydullah bin Jahsh, who had gone to the Negus. Ali bin Ishaq said that he traveled to the Negus and died there. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Umm Habibah while she was in the land of Abyssinia. The Negus gave her in marriage to him, set her dowry at four thousand, and prepared her trousseau himself, sending her to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with Shurahbil bin Hasanah. Her entire trousseau was provided by the Negus, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not send her anything. The dowries of the Prophet's ﷺ other wives were four hundred dirhams.
حدثنا إبراهيم بن إسحاق حدثنا عبد الله بن المبارك عن معمر قال أبي وعلي بن إسحاق أنبأنا عبد الله أخبرنا معمر عن الزهري عن عروة
أنها كانت تحت عبيد الله بن جحش وكان أتى النجاشي وقال علي بن إسحاق وكان رحل إلى النجاشي فمات وأن رسول الله ﷺ تزوج أم حبيبة وإنها بأرض الحبشة زوجها إياه النجاشي ومهرها أربعة آلاف ثم جهزها من عنده وبعث بها إلى رسول الله ﷺ مع شرحبيل ابن حسنة وجهازها كله من عند النجاشي ولم يرسل إليها رسول الله ﷺ بشيء وكان مهور أزواج النبي ﷺ أربع مائة درهم
