Abu Amr bin Hafs divorced her irrevocably while he was away, and his deputy sent her some barley. She was displeased with it, but he said, "By Allah, you have no claim against us."So she came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned this to him. He said, "You are not entitled to maintenance from him." He then instructed her to observe her waiting period at the house of Umm Sharik, but afterwards he said, "That is a woman whom my companions visit frequently. Spend your waiting period at the home of Ibn Umm Maktum instead, for he is a blind man, so you can put aside your outer garments at his place. When your waiting period ends, let me know."When her waiting period ended, she informed him that Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan and Abu al-Jahm had proposed to her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "As for Abu al-Jahm, he never sets down his stick, and as for Muawiya, he is a pauper with no wealth. Marry Usama bin Zayd."
